The AEV haulage company carries out long-distance transportation operations with a fleet of Actros trucks

A never-ending circle.

The transport for express courier services is a machine that runs around the clock. AEV carries out the long-distance part of scheduled services with a fleet of Actros trucks.

The three-pointed star comes out on top. In the meantime AEV has more than one hundred vehicles in operation – the last 40 trucks that were purchased were from Mercedes-Benz.

Thanks to a logistics machine that runs around the clock, the products that we order online arrive at our door after only a few days – some of them after only a few hours. What we see, however, is only the part that takes place during the day – the famous “last mile”. At night, on the other hand, hundreds of tractor/semitrailer combinations drive along routes that have been determined in advance in order to transport packages from one distribution platform to another throughout the whole of Italy.

A substantial number of these vehicles belongs to specialised transport companies who carry out the service by order of express courier services. One of these is AEV, a haulage company located in Loreto Aprutino in the province of Pescara, which is managed by two young road hauliers, brothers Elia and Valerio Di Teodoro. The initials of both their names make up two of the letters in the company’s name – the third standing for Antonio, their father, who began in 1988 at the wheel of a single truck. “Back then our father immediately began to carry out scheduled services for a foreign express courier which had been established in Italy shortly before and which steadily expanded over the years that followed,” Elia explains.

“We're impressed by the reliability and consumption, plus the drivers appreciate the comfort in the cab.“

Antonio Di Teodoro saw the potential of this industry and invested in the company by gradually extending his fleet. In 2007 both sons joined the company which brought the development of AEV to a new level. Today, the fleet comprises more than 100 heavy-duty vehicles.

Elia continues: “Our main business is still the scheduled services between courier platforms, but in the past few years we have expanded to include two important customers. One of them has a shoe and clothing retail sales network in Italy and Spain and the other produces bathroom installations.” The company from the Abruzzo region transports products from the warehouses to the sales outlets for both customers.

The work for the courier is only carried out at night as the packages have to be on-site and ready to be handed over to the final recipient early in the morning. “The departure and arrival times for the trucks are determined in advance and must be strictly adhered to,” says Elia Di Teodoro. “The first thing our customers demand is punctuality. If we're delayed, this can cause organisational problems for the last mile and that is expensive for us as the customer then inflicts contractual penalties upon us. This is why we expect the greatest possible reliability from the vehicles that we use.”

In searching for just that, the Di Teodoro brothers came across the Actros – and have stuck to it. The last 40 vehicles they bought bear the three-pointed star. Elia explains: “We're impressed by the reliability and consumption, plus the drivers appreciate the comfort in the cab. On journeys at night, our worst enemy is microsleep and to prevent this we need to provide drivers with a comfortable and spacious cab as well as comprehensive safety systems. The Actros meets these requirements to the full.”

On longer routes, such as between Novara and Nola, AEV has 3 drivers that share the driving so that the delivery dates and driving times can be maintained. “A truck departs from each of the two platforms; one towards the south and the other northwards,” Elia explains. “Two drivers sit in the second truck. The first driver only takes the wheel for one section of the route and then lets a colleague take over. Both vehicles stop at a spot that is decided upon in advance and the driver that started out driving northwards now changes to the vehicle driving south and drives another section of the route so that all of the legally permissible maximum driving times are maintained.” This whole process has been carefully practised and is based on the experience of the company-owners and the reliability of the Actros.
