Secret Places
The place:
The village of Pin Mill lies on the south bank of the River Orwell in the English county of Suffolk. It is a haven for photographers, painters and people in search of peace and tranquility. Eric Arthur Blair, one of the most important authors in English literature, chose the pseudonym George Orwell to express his love of the river and the idyllic landscape around Pin Mill. The only pub in the village has hardly changed since the 17th Century. In "The Butt & Oyster" the chef treats visitors to fresh fish from the river and the North Sea.

Insider's tip:
"Just a few kilometres down the river, the port of Felixstowe lies on the left bank and the port of Harwich on the right. These are two of England's most important ports, with a huge amount of traffic. There is always something that needs to go aboard at the last minute. Here in Pin Mill you have the exact opposite: the village is an oasis of calm and relaxation. The road to it is rather narrow, but well worthwhile for a quiet break!"
